The Long Road Home Project Passes Through Leavenworth Today

Supporting the men and women of our military has always been a cause that is near and dear to my heart so when this story passed my desk I had to share it.

A group of five veterans are cycling across country on a 90 day bike ride for the Long Road Home Project and will be stopping in Leavenworth today, Friday July 20 at 2pm. (I wish I would have gotten this story earlier to give you more notice, but it may not be too late for some of you.) The ride will take the veterans though 12 States, pedaling more than 4,200 miles to end 90 days later in Washington D.C. They are scheduled to be at the top of Stevens Pass at 12pm July 20, 2012 and have requested any kind of support they can get. They encourage local riders to accompany them at the following locations as their personal time/abilities allow:

12:00 pm        Stevens Pass

12:30 pm        Nason Creek Rest Area

2:00 pm        Arrive Leavenworth

2:30 pm        Depart Leavenworth escorted by local riders to Wenatchee

5:30 pm        Arrive Wenatchee Veteran’s Hall (504 So. Chelan Ave)

Whether you would like to join them on a bike or wave a flag on the side of the road, your support and turnout keeps them fueled and inspired for their long journey ahead.

By the end of their 90 day journey:

1,500 vets will have committed suicide.

270,000 cases of PTSD will have been reported since the inception of the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

50,000 veterans will have returned home physically wounded since 2001, and

300,000 vets will spend a night on the street.

I encourage you to spend a minute or two and peek around on their website or share this post. These 5 vets are cycling to UNITE and raise awareness of the wounds left behind by war. If you would like to make a financial contribution to support the Long Road Home Project, the first $75,000 raised will go to support this years ride and any funds raised above this will go towards supporting future rides and Operation First Response, a national non-profit dedicated to serve all branches of our nation’s Wounded Heroes and their families with personal and financial needs.

Mike’s Road Trip Ranch Review

Early in the winter we had Mike from Mike’s Road Trip stay at Pine River Ranch. Mike travels around the country staying at various Bed and Breakfasts, hotels, motels and even sometimes the back of his truck! Here is what Mike had to say about his stay at Pine River Ranch:

A Refined Rustic Romantic Ranch Review

Pine River Ranch Bed and Breakfast is situated on 22 alpine acres with towering pine trees and snow-capped mountains—the location is within a trifecta of things to do…just 15 miles west of Leavenworth, WA; 15 miles east of the Stevens Pass Ski Resort, and just a mile to the south of Lake Wenatchee.

The accommodations at Pine River Ranch B&B are comfortable and private, each equipped with their own unique hand-crafted log bed, fireplace and Jacuzzi tub.  There are six suites at the Ranch, four of which have their own private entrances in two different cabin structures—the other two suites share the main house entrance.  During my stay I was able to see four of the six rooms; of those four the Nason and the Natapoc suites seem to be the more recently remodeled…and, bear the names of the surrounding mountains.

Each suite has a small kitchenette, so you can store some snacks in case you don’t feel like leaving the comfort of your room.  If you didn’t bring any snacks, not to worry…you can order up a bottle of local wine, chocolate-covered strawberries, a platter of assorted cheeses, even fresh flowers—all to facilitate a romantic stay.  You can even schedule an on-site, in-room massage if you like.

Breakfast at the Ranch is hearty and delicious…and, served a bit differently than most B&B’s—because the focus is on “romance” they deliver breakfast straight to your room, so you can stay cozied up by the fireplace in your room-supplied plush bathrobe.  Each suite comes with its own coffee pot and espresso machine with three different fresh ground coffees to choose from.

To add to the rustic romance of the Ranch, you can even get married in or around their local landmark circa 1940s dairy barn.  The barn is a wonderful structure with all kinds of character.  The surrounding mountains make a wonderful backdrop for pictures.  The best part is…after the wedding festivities, you can stay put in one of the six suites.

No matter when you visit the Ranch, there is plenty to see and do in/around the area.  The Ranch has trails throughout the property that go right by a pond and to the shores of Pine River. Leavenworth is just 15 miles away and is a fun and eventful area.  Bavarian themed to its core, Leavenworth will make you feel like you’ve been transported thousands of miles away to a small German/Swiss town.  Take a Video Tour with Mike through downtown Leavenworth in the beautiful winter! The Wenatchee River runs along highway 2 right through Leavenworth and makes for some great fishing, hiking and exploration  Lake Wenatchee, just a mile away from the Ranch, is a wonderful place for picnicking, hiking, kayaking, boating, fishing, camping or just exploring.

My husband and I try to go skiing every year at Stevens Pass for our anniversary. Usually, after a long day of skiing we drive home and some years we drive into Leavenworth. (A great Bavarian Village about 40 minutes from Stevens Pass) This year, my husband said he had too much work and we would be driving home after our ski trip. Little did I know, he had been doing some research to find a romantic anniversary getaway in Leavenworth and he found Pine River Ranch Bed and Breakfast.

After skiing when he turned right out of the parking lot instead of left and I looked over to see his grin from ear to ear, I knew he was up to something. About 20 minutes later we pulled into the gorgeous driveway at Pine River Ranch. I saw a giant barn, glowing in the night time and the fresh fallen snow added to the festive holiday decorations at the beautiful house with a stunning wraparound porch. We were greeted by Tim, the host and his chocolate lab Bailey (who was very well mannered and stayed by Tim's side until she sensed we were dog lovers!)

He served us fresh brewed coffee and cookies right from the oven while we sat by the fire to warm up while he checked us in. We were staying in the Natapoc Suite, which is in its own cabin, not in the main house at the Bed and Breakfast which was nice for some privacy. Tim walked us out to the cabin with DVDs in hand from their collection and showed us our gorgeous suite with a Jacuzzi Spa, river rock gas fireplace and the coolest bed I have ever seen! It was hand made out of beautiful pine tree branches and logs and had huge pillows and big, thick blankets. The suite was simply amazing. About 10 minutes later, I heard a knock at the door and my husband got another huge grin. I opened it to find Tim holding a beautiful tray of delectable chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of champagne. My husband was racking up brownie points left and right. We enjoyed the Jacuzzi spa and curled up on the oversized couch in front of their new flat screen TVs to watch a DVD before calling it a night
The next morning as I was getting ready to go have breakfast in the main house my husband informed me that at Pine River Ranch they bring breakfast right to your front door! Tim delivered a piping hot tray of his "Aunt Janet’s Breakfast Casserole" with fresh fruit and a delicious smoothie and we ate it out on our deck curled up in blankets!
After we dragged ourselves away from Pine River we headed into Leavenworth for shopping and a late lunch (about 15 minutes away, but on the beautiful stretch of highway so we didn't mind the drive). This was the best anniversary present I have ever gotten and for any couples out there looking for a little bit of romance and rekindling you could not ask for a better place than Pine River Ranch.
